Video abstract: New technology could stamp out bacteria in persistent wounds
In this video abstract for MaterialsViews.com , researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison describe their paper “Polymeric Multilayers that Contain Silver Nanoparticles can be Stamped onto Biological Tissues to Provide Antibacterial Activity” published in Advanced Functional Materials (http ). Using an advanced form of a rubber stamp, researchers have developed a way to adhere an ultra-thin antibacterial coating to a wound. The active ingredient, silver, “has been used to prevent and treat infections for ages,” says first author Ankit Agarwal, a postdoctoral fellow in chemical and biological engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “But silver can also kill skin cells, and therefore we need to develop materials that deliver antibacterial but nontoxic levels of silver to wounds.” In a study just published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, Agarwal, chemical and biological engineering professor Nicholas Abbott, and colleagues described a process for creating a transparent ultra-thin polymer coating carrying precise loads of extremely fine silver nanoparticles. The coating, just a few molecules thick, was assembled on a flexible piece of rubber and then rubber-stamped onto a piece of cadaver skin that simulated a wound in the experiment. To test the activity against bacteria, the researchers treated skin samples with two bacteria that commonly infect wounds. Using a silver dosage that had not harmed skin cells in previous tests, the bacteria …

The Abracadada Rubber Stamp Museum
Another archival gem from the vaults! In the mid ’80′s I had the pleasure of illustrating rubber stamp designs for the Abracadada Rubber Stamp Company (Stamp Francisco). The company was owned and run by William Gaglione and his lovely wife Darlene, both who also happened to be the founders of the Bay Area Dadaists and major performance artists with a rich history of Dada / Performance art in San Francisco (I would later join the Bay Area Dadaists and wreak some DADA havoc, but that’s another video series). William was also a collector and archiver of everything rubber stamp, and his basement housed a makeshift rubber stamp museum supreme. It was a rare treat for anyone who happened by the house during ‘operating’ hours and got the e-ticket tour from William himself! This was a short video I shot of William in his Rubber Stamp Museum giving the lens the full rubber stamp experience, shot for a video class and around 1986, it was part of a series I did called ‘OBSESSIONS OF HABIT’ and included many weird and wonderful collections (and the people who collected them). William’s wife Darlene collected egg-beaters (!) and her segment is also on YouTube. Also part of this series is a collector of Barbie Dolls (one of each, from the first to the most current) and a guy who was building a 4-crew ship in his backyard – all to be uploaded soon. Enjoy. www.roulettestudios.com
